La Boheme Synopsis

The inspiration for Moulin Rouge and RENT, La Bohème is the original bohemian love story, set among the fishnets and fairy lights of 1930s Berlin. A poet, a painter, a musician and a philosopher walk into a bar to celebrate a sudden windfall in a lean winter. It’s Christmas Eve, and the poet has just felt the first pangs of great love. When a seamstress knocks on his door searching for candlelight, the pair fall in love faster than she can sing “Yes, they call me Mimì...” Between the ideals of love and art and the cruel realities of cold winters, bitter jealousies and empty pockets, two sets of lovers are trying to find their way.

Running time: approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, including one interval

  • A number of spaces are available for wheelchairs in each theatre at the Sydney Opera House. Wheelchairs are available from the Stage Door for use by patrons free of charge. Wheelchair access is by ramp from the southern entrance of the Concourse. Undercover wheelchair access is available from Stage Door and the Sydney Opera House Car Park. It is essential that you specify any needs when proceeding with your booking.
  • Dogs or any animals trained to assist people with disabilities are welcome inside all theatres and restaurants.
  • Please ask staff for assistance with receivers which are available from the Concert Hall and Opera Theatre cloak rooms and in the Drama Theatre, Playhouse and The Studio foyers.
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 30 travelers

    La Boheme was extraordinary. The orchestra were brilliant, the music so evocative, the cast so brilliant and committed to their art. The night was exhilarating in the most beautiful location in Sydney. Walking out of this glorious building and looking back to the lit city skyline brings a lump to the throat.

    This was a splendid performance! The singing, the individual performances, the set and the 1930s setting were all magnificent. Live theatre, in all its formats must be sustained. The unique experience of watching and listening to live opera is without parallel. Thank you for crafting such a wonderful evening's entertainment for my wife and me.

    Enjoyed this 1930s staging of La Boheme at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Seats in the Circle area were high up but able to see everything. Translation screen easily visible, though some reviews of lower area seats indicate more difficult to view during the performance. Checked this one off the bucket list!

    The singing was exceptional, but the location of the subtitles screen was completely unacceptable and detracted from the entire experience. To read them required looking almost straight overhead, and we were sitting in row N. I heard other attendees making the same remark. I don't feel that I got my money's worth ($354) for a pair of tickets.

    Great performance and staging treatment of a great opera. La Boheme is one of my favorite operas of all time and the performance at the Opera House didn't disappoint.

    During my five week sojourn in this wonderful city I have been privileged to go to musical events no less than six times - including the NYE Gala Concert followed by fireworks. But still the event I will remember for the rest of my life will be the production of ‘La Boheme’ I saw last night. I have seen it before several times and hope to see it again yet many more times? Regardless, last night’s performance will remain the definitive, most glittering experience!

    This is a relatively short opera with a sweet story. The singers/actors were wonderful. Good price and easy to exchange voucher for the tickets. Subtitles are provided above the stage.

    Since we herein Sydney we had to go and view the Sydney Opera House, but what a better way to do it by attend a performance of La Boheme. The performance and theater both impressive. The subtitles above stage enhance the performance. And latter the bars outside and the ambiance were the best way to end a delicious night

    Wonderful performance of La Boheme. Go early and enjoy a glass while taking in the magnificent view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. A must not only for opera lovers, but for everyone.
